Abstract

The year 1795 is a milestone for the Greek Enlightenment scholar Athanasios Psalidas of Ioannina. He decides to return to his homeland, bearing the valuable performances of years, but also the rich knowledge which he acquired during his many years abroad, mainly in Vienna. His haste and writing beauty are at their peak. Inspired, now, by intense feelings of progressiveness but also of anti-clericalism, the scholar has managed to feel the bitter hand of censorship of his ideas, through the destruction of the translation of the logic of the German philosopher Friedrich Christian Baumeister, which he himself had edited. The culprits for this development were two followers of Eugenios Voulgaris, who were strongly annoyed by the comments of the introduction, which in fact had been written by Psalidas, who now openly turned against his old teacher. The withdrawal of printed copies of the book in 1795 caused Psalidas to explode, who decided in the same year to publish his work Kalokinimata (Moves Towards Progress), taking aim at Voulgaris and his two followers. Kalokinimata reveals to the modern reader an invisible history of intrigue and philosophical clarifications from the troubled pre-revolutionary years, while, at the same time, the unwavering support of Psalidas for the values of the word, the revolutionary spirit and the predominance of scientific thought over superstition. The publication is interspersed with a detailed prologue and introduction by philosophy professor Ilias Tepelis, which illuminate every spark of our fascinating history, presenting, for the first time, to the reading public, unknown aspects of the whole affair.
