Abstract
Kleftika folk songs, widely popular in the prerevolutionary era, are a rich source of material from which to outline the social contours which paved the way to the 1821 Revolution. By outlining a set of notions relating to heroic masculinity and male valour (“timi”, “andreia”), but also utilising humorous and ironic tropes, they provide a window into the social imaginary of the era, including dominant perceptions of the self, gender norms, and the primacy of community-making.
