Abstract

In their role as administrators of endowments, the Greek Orthodox communities of Vienna functioned as intermediaries between the will of the founders, the internal administration, the Habsburg authorities and the endowments’ beneficiaries. The so-called “Endowments for foreign purposes” beneficiary to places in the Ottoman Empire were administered in both communities separately. In 1832, a large part of the locations benefited from the endowments was located outside the territory of the Greek state, in communities that were incorporated substantially later (or never). With the foundation of the Greek state, some juridical confusion about the legal position of the foundations ensued on the one hand; on the other, it influenced the establishment of foundations. In addition to Vienna and the homeland communities, also recipients within Greece were considered and some foundations were administered independently of the Greek Orthodox communities of Vienna. This presentation examines how the foundation of the Greek state impacted the administration of the endowments. Beyond that, by means of selected source examples, it discusses changes in the attitudes of individual founders, both male and female, after 1821.
