Abstract

With the aid of material from police and court records from 1822 to 1827, this paper examines the landscape of interpersonal violence and crime in revolutionary Greece in its interaction with the emergence of new police and criminal justice institutions. It argues that the revolution released tensions that pushed the traditional mechanisms of conflict resolution and social peace to their limits. The increased demand for the acceptance of security and justice created space for the new institutions by the affected population, while their appropriation created space for the formulation of social demands that updated the political values of the revolution.
