Abstract

Although the idealising recourse to Greek antiquity formed an essential basis for European philhellenism, it can only partly explain the dynamics that in 1821 led to an unprecedented social mobilisation under its slogan. This mobilisation was by no means solely a manifestation of romantic fervour for ancient Hellas, but rather had manifold motives that affected in an equally manifold way the war itself as well as its public perception. This presentation examines aspects of this interaction on the example of a war volunteer from Württemberg whose posthumously published “Memorabilia from Greece” (Denkwürdigkeiten aus Griechenland) provide a little known, yet in many respects, remarkable testimony.
