Abstract

The Greek Consulate General in Trieste, in cooperation the municipality of Trieste, hosts an exhibition, “Les Combats des Grecs: Wallpaper and philhellenic decoration in Italian mansions”, from 16 October to 7 November 2021, in the municipal exhibition space Magazzino 26. The exhibition, which gives the public the opportunity to dive into the unique world of panoramic wallpaper, presents one of the most complete series of such decoration, entitled “The Battles of the Greeks” (Les Combats des Grecs), published in 1828 by Zuber, a famous French manufacturer (in which only professional craftsmen worked). The copy of the “The Battles of the Greeks” panorama on show is one of the three original series preserved in private collections in northern Italy, an area where in the 19th-century French wallpaper was a very popular technique of decorating mansions (palazzi).
