Abstract
The Academy of Athens hosts an exhibition marking the bicentenary of the national regeneration, honouring the uprising of the Greek nation and the self-sacrifice of the Greeks during the years of the revolution, together with the contribution of the Greek enlighteners to the ideological preparation of the struggle during the pre-revolutionary period.
The exhibition entitled “ Narratives of freedom: the Academy of Athens honours 1821” presents the publishing activities of the thinkers of liberation, the actions of the Philiki Etaireia and the work of the philhellenes, in the long journey from the end of the 18th century until the Battle of Navarino in 1827. Part of the exhibition is dedicated to the national poet Dionysios Solomos, while the narrative concludes with a reference to the folk traditions, music and costumes that have survived to modern times.
The exhibition presents for the first time unique forms and documents from the archives of the Research Centres of the Academy of Athens, as well as rare publications of the Library of the Academy of Athens, as well as exhibits from its art collection.
The exhibits of the Academy of Athens are enriched with objects of historical and artistic value, historical artefacts, memorabilia, engravings, works of art, philhellenic publications, which were donated by institutions and collectors, such as the Mariolopoulos-Kanaginis Foundation for Environmental Sciences and Kostas Kanaris, Michael Skoullos, Thanasis Michaelidis and others.
