Abstract

Greece bequeathed democracy to Europe: this heritage is one of the reasons for our ties to this country and the foundation of our European values. However, in line with the current questioning on the functioning of democracies, this legacy of Greek antiquity has been recently questioned: this ancient democracy was only named thus as it excluded certain categories of the population, it had been powerless to avoid civil wars, it cannot be counted among the benchmark institutional systems. Can ancient Greek democracy really serve as a principle and a model for our European democracies? What exactly was this model? Is it more of a fantasy rather than a reality? How does its image change over time? On the occasion of the bicentenary of the Greek Revolution, the French Institute of Greece and the French School of Athens are offering an online round table on these questions, featuring:

Vana Nicolaidou-Kyrianidou, professor of political philosophy, president of the Department of Philosophy, National and Kapodistrian University of Athens

Patrick Boucheron, professor at Collège de France

Georges Faraklas, professor of Political Philosophy, Panteion University

Paulin Ismard, professοr of ancient Greek history at Aix-Marseille Université, member of the Institut universitaire de France.
