Abstract
"It is impossible to understand the War of Independence without first considering the environment in which it was born. And yet most studies start from the premise that the community of modern Greeks (Romioi) emerges through literature and trade in a declining empire. This presentation insists on a different perspective: the Greek War of Independence was the by-product of the transformations that the Ottoman Empire underwent since the late 17th and early 18th centuries in its attempt to survive amid international state competition."
