Abstract

On the occasion of the bicentenary of the 1821 Revolution, the Attica Region hosts a conference of “Greeks, Romioi, Arvanites: The villagers of Attica in the Greek Revolution. The case of Maroussi and Halandri”. The aim of the meeting is to honour, illuminate and highlight the contribution of the villagers of Attica, who were mostly Christian Arvanites, and specifically of the areas of Maroussi and Halandri, to the Greek Revolution. The speakers seek to illuminate a hidden part of history: The significant participation of the Arvanites and other villagers of Maroussi and Halandri in the outbreak of the revolution in the villages of Attica and Athens until the successful conclusion of the second siege of the Acropolis, which liberated the city from Ottoman rule. Based on a few but important historical sources, they referred to a series of events, battles, people and fallen in the national liberation struggle, providing information that had never been aired before about this invisible aspect of the revolution in Attica.
