Abstract
The paper starts with a discussion of the Moldavian and Wallachian boyars’ liaisons with Philiki Etaireia. It then addresses the role of the boyars in shaping the Russian policy in the principalities after 1821. Finally, it assesses the impact of the Greek War of Independence and the Russian responses to it on modern Romanian nationalism.
