Abstract

In historical works on the Greek Revolution, Metternich and “his” Austria have often been depicted almost as villains opposing humanity, freedom and progress with the support of the sultan against the Greeks. Metternich’s Near Eastern policy in the 1820s was therefore usually viewed as a black and white story in which scholars tended to extremes, usually with the denigration of Metternich, but it is also possible to find him depicted as a man with hidden pro-Greek sentiment. Did Austria and its chancellor, Metternich, deserve such a one-sided portrayal of their part in the narrative or is a revisionist approach applicable in their case? The principal aim of the paper is to offer a fitting answer to this question through the re-evaluation of Metternich’s attitude towards the Greek Revolution in comparison with the policies of other involved European powers: Britain, France and Russia.
