Abstract

This book renews the way we approach the pictorial history of the Greek War of Liberation. Its novel viewpoint consists of, but is not limited to, contextualising the paintings of European artists in the historical, cultural and political milieu of their countries, during the Age of Revolutions. Moreover, through the paintings themselves and in conjunction with the existing written testimonies, the book reveals the ideological conceptions and political views of the painters, as well as the choices and goals of those placing the order for and buying the paintings. Finally, the book underlines the ways that specific works of art colour the reception of historical affairs, touch on social structures across time and cause deeper emotions, thus succeeding in operating as symbols of human dignity and liberty even after the end of the 1821 Revolution, and up to the present day.
