Abstract
The necklace was made in the context of the Museum of Geology, Palaeontology and Palaeoanthropology’s participation in Action 21, marking the bicentenary of the Greek Revolution, in order to emphasize the contribution of minerals and consequently geology in contemporary art and jewellery making. The jewellery in its entirety is knitted through the miyuki bead-weaving technique. The predominant colours in the necklace are white and blue just like the Greek flag. The helix formed on the jewel with alternations of white and blue colour resembles the waving of the Greek flag. The flowers that hang along the jewellery look like the coins that hang in Greek traditional costumes. The predominant minerals in the necklace are aquamarine, pearl and hematite. Also, size 11 miyuki crystals are used in the weaving of the helix and the flowers.
