Abstract
Apostolos Chantzaras states: “ My works with references to 1821 mean to me more than a painting form or a modern design. It is an epos. I was born in Agrinio, Etoloakarnania, where for some people, the heroes are honoured and even come to life through folk songs and traditions. The festival of Ai Symios in Messolongi is the most important component of our cultural identity. My father painted the icons of the monastery emphasising the religious character. The companies of the riders, the horsemen meet every year in a revival ritual. With drums and drums in a representation of ecstatic dances, they dance with their hands up, performing the tsamiko. And then heaven and earth become one”
