Abstract
The masterpiece opera by Gioachino Rossini is presented in its original French version for the first time in Greece, on the occasion of the bicentenary of the Greek Revolution. The work refers to the struggle of the Greeks against the Ottomans and the mobilisation of the philhellenic movement in Paris. It was first performed at the Paris Opera in 1826 with great success, while all proceeds from these first performances were donated to the Greek revolutionaries. Conductor George Petrou leads a glamorous distribution consisting of great Greek and foreign soloists, the ERT National Symphony Orchestra and the Athens Municipality Choir. “Director Rodoula Gaitanou collaborates with seven visual artists selected by art historian Katerina Koskina, who are inspired by music, follow the plot of the opera and create in real time a pioneering spectacular visual proposal."
