Abstract
Two world-acclaimed maritime historians, specialised in the Mediterranean Sea, reflect on the status of maritime trade (especially the part of it controlled by Greeks) during the Ottoman period and the transition to the nation-state. They also discuss the relation between the Greek merchants-turned-shipowners and the colonial seas.
