Abstract

The Ottoman properties in Athens during the revolutionary period are recorded in four manuscripts. It seems that their registration was made under the supervision of Spyridon Palaiologos, an Athens notary, while Panagis Skouzes also participated in the process. It is, according to all indications, the registration of Turkish properties that the government of Ioannis Kapodistrias was looking for in vain during the sale of the Turkish properties of Athens, as its main author, Paleologos, systematically and politely refused to hand it over. The records concern the fixed property of the Ottomans: houses, workshops, fields, vines, animals, olive trees, orchards, animal capital, beehives, etc. Their indexing and classification allows us to locate the extent of the properties, their type, their geographical distribution, and their concentration. We can therefore form an image of Ottoman owners and sizes of their properties, their residential distribution – particularly clear as regards the city of Athens – while issues concerning the conditions of production and cultivation, due to the nature of the document, are presented in part and in an incomplete manner. As the material is also accompanied with a record of money transactions, we have the opportunity to form an image for the borrowing relations in this particular instance and partly for the needs that the loans granted or requested cover. Finally, having good reason to assume that this is the land registry that the Greek government was eagerly looking for, both the search for it, as well as its concealment, reveal the economic behaviour of those involved.
