Abstract
In this book, Athina Kakouri briefly explains how and why Hellenism was kept alive during the four centuries of Ottoman rule and narrates the main events – war, politics and diplomacy – of the decade from the 1821 Revolution to the assassination of Kapodistrias in 1831. She sees him as a dominant figure and identifies the forces that prevented him from creating a state, even to the point of assassination. Her main aim is to provide a better understanding of strategy. The way of writing is simple and direct, the names and the dates are limited, while references and correlations are made that help the reader – child or adult – to feel how much this past influences the current Greek reality, therefore his or her life. The table of contents reveals the simple structure of the book. The book concludes with some recommendations for further reading.
