The Holy Diocese of Hydra, Spetses and Aegina hosts in the Holy Church of Three New Martyrs of Spetses in Spetses a scientific conference on “The contribution of Hydra, Spetses, Psara and other naval islands to the 1821 Revolution”. The topic of the first speaker is the three new martyrs from Spetses who gave their lives in Chios: Nikolaos Petroutsis and his two nephews, Stamatios and Ioannis. It presents their lives as traders who were arrested and executed for refusing to convert. The second speaker aims to present the first naval achievements of the Spetsiot sailors, who offered invaluable services in the struggle for independence. Their action and their valuable help was recognised by all while the names of local heroes such as Bouboulina, Androutsos, Lembesis, etc., are mentioned. The purpose of the third presentation is to illuminate invisible sides behind the glorious achievements of the heroes and captains and to present the economic framework for the operation of the war fleet of Hydra, Spetses and Psara.
