Abstract

As part of its 1821 bicentenary programme, ERT screened the documentary series “Why '21? 12 questions”. The documentary series presents, over 12 episodes, the basic aspects of Greek history, following the thread that connects the 200 years of life of the Greek nation-state since the Revolution. In their research, journalists Marilena Katsimi and Pierros Tzanetakos sought answers to 12 timeless questions (for example, Why do we celebrate 1821? Why do we go bankrupt? Are the foreigners our friends or enemies? Why are we divided? Why are there Greeks everywhere? etc.). The historical narrative evolved in parallel with the plot of the documentary and was enriched with images from the research of the two journalists in the places where the most important chapters of the Greek nation were written. Valuable archival material complemented the visualisation of the sources. What is required is a charming and documented narration of events, through personal stories, myths and truths. The aim is to disseminate scientific knowledge to the general television audience, through the popularization of history. The 12 questions were answered by 80 leading historians, political scientists, economists, constitutionalists and social psychologists, teachers in Greece and abroad. At the same time, 18 students, elementary and high school gave their own perspective on modern Greek history. The detection of analogies and differences between identical historical events, contributes to the understanding of the past, but also to have inspiration and vision for the future.
