Abstract
The curator, Dr Konstantinos V. Proimos, notes: “In this photo series, Nikos Basias conducts an interesting and unusual experiment. He photographs paintings by Nikolaos Gyzis, Theodoros Vryzakis, Theofilos and other artists, which record the successful outcome of the struggle of the Greeks for their independence in 1821 and are widely circulated in books and commemorative albums. With most of these images being photographed, the audience is familiar because they have seen them many times. Basias photographs the images after taking them out of the freezer, forming a round ice frame so that they recall the shape of the Medal of Honour. What is striking about Basias, however, is the way he sets up his photographs as still lifes, placing readymades next to them, ready-made objects.”
