Abstract
Recreate Greece hosts a series of online events on the occasion of the bicentenary of the Greek Revolution entitled “1821: Truths behind the Historical Events”. The purpose of the events is to establish our national self-knowledge. In the first talk the presenter tries to answer questions such as: “What was the course over time of Hellenism after the Roman conquest?”, “How did it evolve during the Byzantine period?”, “How did it resist Ottoman rule?”, “Which factors acted as a deterrent to the liberation struggle of 1821 and which gave the impetus for the realisation of our national goals?” Finally, it presents the two main factors that shaped the relations of the Greek raya with the Turkish conquerors, namely the role of the Ecumenical Patriarchate and the Phanariots.
