Abstract
The concert “Free Besieged” will take place at Strani Hill, the place where the national poet Dionysios Solomos wrote the poem, and will be presented in a first complete performance, in a musical composition by the great Zakynthian composer Timotheos Arvanitas. The work – an heroic service in the form of an oratorio for mixed choir, soloist and large symphony orchestra – is based on the traditional musical elements of Zakynthos and the general Ionian culture, and the present concert will be conducted by its composer, Timotheos Arvanitakis. The Piraeus vocal ensemble Libro Coro and the conductor Anthi Gourountis, whose repertoire includes important works of the Ionian music school, such as a series of concerts on Solomos and Matzaros’ “Hymn to Freedom”, accepted the invitation to collaborate with this concert marking the bicentenary of the Greek Revolution, an which is held under the auspices of the Ionian Islands Region.
