Abstract

"The exhibition aims to reflect the intellectual, social and artistic development of the pre-revolutionary and revolutionary period of the city of Ioannina and the wider area through rich visual material. Special emphasis is given to prominent personalities of the time, such as Rigas and Lord Byron with direct references to the Greek Enlightenment, European travellers and Epirot benefactors. Emblematic works of a particularly symbolic nature of the time, such as the Map of Rigas (Kapesovo copy) and the work of Lord Byron, Child Harold΄s Pilgrimage (1812), which connect Epirus and Dodona of pre-revolutionary times with the events of the time, are key axes of that report. People like Dimitrios Nikolidis, Alexios Noutsos, Markos Botsaris, Eugenios Voulgaris, Athanasios Psalidas, Ali Pasha and the Zosimades participated in the flow of events and happenings, which were shaped by both the stratigraphy of the ancient times and the fundamental traditions of Byzantium and the newer European movements, such as the claims of the individual rights to education, freedom, national independence.
