Abstract
The 18th century was for Europe the Age of Enlightenment, of progress, of the great development of the sciences and of the spirit. The Enlightenment aspired for the prevalence of social freedom, scientific knowledge and religious tolerance at all levels of human activity, as well as for the liberation of society from any prejudices and superstitions … The educational programme “Everything, which is also called the World…: Maps and depictions of the World, from Antiquity to the Age of Enlightenment” explores the conditions that lead man to wonder and seek knowledge of the world, and the way in which this knowledge is transformed into a process of self-knowledge, nationally and personally, from antiquity to modern times. The games and activities that accompany the programme help us to understand the functions and uses of the map and to become for a while assistant cartographers in the cartographers’ workshops of the 18th century, in an era before digitality.
