Abstract
Crete, on the eve of the 1821 Revolution. The Christian community of Megalokastro (Iraklio) requests from Vatopedi Monastery to send them the Cincture, due to the outbreak of the plague epidemic in 1817. A great adventure begins. The reliquary with the Holy Cincture was stolen in 1821 at a time when the Fathers of the Holy Cincture often requested optional cash donations. The major protagonists are: The monastic community of Vatopedi and the religious authorities in Crete, Santorini and Istanbul. The Ottoman authorities of the subjected and the ministries of the rebels. The governor Ioannis Kapodistrias and his brother, Viaros. The Holy Fathers, escorts and envoys. Merchants, captains, doctors and consuls of European powers. Let everyone cooperate, occasionally, with the fanatical mob or the most pious, God-fearing people. Everyone and everything.
