Title

Controversies in Santorini over whether or not to participate in the revolution

Date

Abstract

Residents from various parts of Santorini, all Orthodox, sided with the other Aegean revolutionaries. The uprising took on a radical character when Vangelis Matzarakis, commissioner of Alexandros Ypsilantis in the archipelago, arrived on the island and with a renewed mandate from Dimitrios Ypsilantis for the organisation of revolutionary tax offices on the islands. His attempt to impose a new administrative system and collect the island’s taxes for the needs of the revolution met with the reaction not only of the strong universal minority of Fira, which with the dynamic support of most foreign deputy consuls insisted on its neutrality, but also strong Orthodox notables and the Orthodox metropolitan, who until then controlled the community administration and the consciences of the inhabitants. The form and extent of this confrontation will be investigated, on how Matzarakis’s opponents finally prevailed and how the revolutionary government reacted to this overturn.
