Abstract

The revolutions of 1821 and the Greek War of Independence were pivotal events in the modern history of the Balkans and in the course of the transition from the Ottoman Empire to the modern nation-states. The “legacy” of 1821 in the Balkans followed a general course from the direct influence of the national liberation revolutionary movements in the Balkans in the 19th century, to its gradual integration into the national narratives of the Balkan states through various and different readings. In the suggested presentation the comparative approach of the readings of 1821 in the Balkan historiographies during the 19th and 20th century will be attempted as well as the identification of common elements and particularities.
