Abstract

The volume contains the Proceedings of the International Conference on the time, life and work of the first two members of the Mavrokordatos family, Alexandros and Nicholas. The impetus for the organisation of the conference was the important position of the two scholars in the “Republic of Letters”, in addition to their presence at the forefront of political events in Europe in the late 17th and early 18th centuries. Although historians have enough material to research and comment on their life and work within the Ottoman Empire and their role in shaping the modern Greek national consciousness, it is very important that the work they left behind is investigated from a philological perspective as well, which contributes decisively (even at an early stage) to the formation of the modern Greek narrative prose, both fictional/literary as well as historical or philosophical. Also, on an ideological level, they introduced modern ideology into modern Greek thought and promoted the ideas of the still emerging European Enlightenment.
