Abstract
The French philhellene Claude Denis Raffenel was in Smyrna when the Greek Revolution broke out, and witnessed the retaliations suffered by the Christian population of the city. On his return to Paris, he wrote the history of modern Hellenism. In 1826 he came to Greece, took part in military operations and was killed during the siege of the Acropolis in Athens.
