Abstract

This study presents and analyses the multifaceted, demographic, economic and social changes experienced by the city of Missolonghi during the 1821 Revolution: population movements, commercial and general economic activity, the action of various social groups, the impact of civil conflicts, etc. A special place is occupied by the events of the last siege of Missolonghi: the war and the organization of the defence, the famine and its consequences, the issue of providing supplies for the city. The book’s contribution regarding the study of the everyday life of the revolutionary period is important as well. Topics such as housing, livelihood, occupations, customs and religious beliefs, differentiation in the roles of men, women and children, the organisation and operation of institutions and services, education, the press, justice and care are approached with the aim of a deeper understanding of an entire era, which marked the beginning of the modern Greek world.
