Abstract
The Municipality of Hydra hosts a talk by Konstantinos Stefanis on the subject “Foreign travellers in Hydra before the 1821 Revolution “. Before the revolution, few foreign travellers visited Hydra since it was not a regular port where ships stopped for supplies, nor did it offer attractions and ancient remains, like other places in Greece that attracted visitors from the West. However, Hydra had already become famous in the Mediterranean for the Hydriots’ abilities in navigation, shipbuilding and trade, and as a result they enjoyed enviable wealth and independence compared to other parts of Greece.
