Abstract
The study of the historical course of Poros during the years of the Greek Revolution goes beyond the limits of microhistory and local history and enlightens us about a series of general realities. The revolution brought this small seaport out of historical obscurity and made it the seat of the temporary Greek government, the convening place of an international diplomatic conference and (thanks to the natural fortification of its bay) the first naval station of the Greek Navy.
The history of Poros is therefore not autonomous but heteronomous. In 1803 Poros joined an island federation under the patronage of Hydra and remained under Hydra’s shadow of for more than two decades (until the arrival of Ioannis Kapodistrias).
The military action of the Poriot warlord Christodoulos Mexis during the revolution and the uprising of Poros (1831) verify the words of Nikolaos Spiliadis (Secretary of the State during Kapodistrias’ term) that the developments in Poros were the echo of those “in Hydra”.
