Abstract

The year 1821 “after 1821” forms, in the “longue durée”, codes, symbols, rituals and meanings, which connect collective memory to national identity. This lecture refers to the way in which literature, one of the most central conduits, of cultural memory that is, played a decisive role in the “imagology” of the 20th century. More specifically, the topic that will concern it is the way in which literature was associated with the anniversaries of 1821 during the 19th century. The main argument is that through this crossroads, a very powerful model for the reception of 1821 was formed: the model of the “national poet” and “national poetry”.
