Abstract
The Greek Revolution had a special significance for the Americans. American newspapers of the time called the outpouring of sympathy and support for the Greeks the “Greek Fire”, drawing a parallel to Byzantine liquid fire. Although the composition of the Greek fire has been lost to history, the American “Greek Fire” consisted of an enthusiasm for the Greek struggle, inspired by the belief that democratic ideals connected Americans to the ancient Greek past.
This book, however, does not simply contain a story about the extent of the support that the Americans provided to the Greeks. The Greek independence movement provides a unique vehicle to explore American interests in Greece and the Ottoman Empire; to identify the ways in which the Americans believed they would help the Greeks secure independence, and to examine how these the efforts influenced 19th-century reform movements in the US.
American support for the Greek Revolution had social and political impact in the US, while, in contrast, the Greek War of Independence helped Americans define themselves as a people and interpret the legacy of the American Revolution on the international stage.”
