Abstract

Ten women between 1822 and 1827 address an administrative authority of the emerging revolutionary power. Ten stories from the years of the Greek Revolution: stories of war, stories of injustice, stories of gender and social relations. Stories that illuminate the everyday life of a changing world and at the same time allow us to focus on its invisible protagonists: the anonymous women of the Greek 19th century. Through their voices, their complaints, the very logic of formulating a written request emerges the shocking transition into the dominion of the citizen. Of the person who recognises the new power and at the same time feels the right to appeal to it.” Women's Plea” is no ordinary book for 1821. And the question mark in its title warns that it undermines our preconceived certainties about the past and the present.
