Kolokotronis' Memoirs: an interactive theatrical documentary

Type specialization

The performance “Kolokotronis’ Memoirs: An Interactive Theatrical Documentary” is an innovative artistic and research project, in terms of conception and structure, by the director Marianna Lampiri in collaboration with the Laboratory of Music Acoustics and Technology (LABmat) of the Department of Music Studies of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (NKUA), with the scientific head of the Department’s Chair, Professor of Music Technology Anastasia Georgaki. The project is supported by the Hellenic Foundation for Research and Innovation (HFRI) in the context of the 1st Announcement of the Action “Science and Society: 200 Years since the Greek Revolution”. The director, in collaboration with her research and artistic team, presents in the form of a documentary in the theatre the historical narrative dictated by Theodoros Kolokotronis to Georgios Tertsetis entitled “Narration of events of the Greek race from 1770 to 1836” and published after his death. The performance is based on new musical interaction techniques and soundscapes using new technologies. It is worth noting that this text, undoubtedly the leading and most important personal testimony about the Revolution of 1821, is being transferred to the theatre for the first time. The stage narrative places the commander-in-chief, symbol of the Greek Revolution, in an idiosyncratic, imaginary, historical museum, as a living and present “exhibit”. Focusing on the dramatised form of Kolokotronis’ speech, the show narrates his life and actions, while at the same time the narrative is framed by soundscapes, live music, video art and live filming with the use of digital technology, in a continuous dialogue between the historical past, memory and its reception in the present.
