Abstract

The programme of the Parents’ School–Open University of Katerini for 2020–2021 includes talks by distinguished speakers to mark the bicentenary of the 1821 Greek Revolution. Academics, hierarchs, politicians, doctors, etc., from America, Russia, Greece, Cyprus and Mount Athos illustrate with their research aspects of the epic struggle to liberate Greece from Ottoman rule. The eighth event is dedicated to the heroes of 1821 who are seen as timeless models for their ethos, patriotism and virtue. They were the messengers of the long and unbroken continuity of Hellenism. The fighters had noble convictions and were symbols of principles and values. The second speaker refers to the importance that the heroes gave to education and emphasises that they should be a model today for the new generation that is the future of Greece.
