Abstract
The subject of the proposed paper is the most important official transactions which, in the form in which they are recorded, allow us to delimit networks and mechanisms associated with the circulation and control of financial resources in the context of the Greek Revolution. We will focus on the second period of the Provisional Administration, from April 1823 to October 1824. On the one hand, because it was a critical period of transition to a centrally organised system of government. On the other hand because the source, which covers the above space, constitutes a voluminous data unit. The main source is an accounting book of the Economy Ministry. A large general ledger, with many sheets and a number of accounts linked together by successive entries based on a double-entry bookkeeping system. The method starts from the source structure (from the sequence of transactions) and consists in the transition from form to content. Definitely, this method has its limits. It will allow us, however, to represent on a first level relationships, networking and mechanisms. The accounting records represent the circulation of all types of revenues and their conversion into expenditures per ministry or other body. This data is often displayed in primary impersonal accounts, but each record contains a secondary analysis based on the person who took part in the transaction. This material, therefore, provides information, on the one hand, about the circulation of financial resources and, on the other, about the various legitimate actors who took on, for a greater or lesser period of time, one or more roles (political, military, economic, etc.), sometimes in combination, in the context of the revolutionary power. All these clearly provide a kind of dense description of the finances of the struggle, with emphasis on that part of them that was related to the public financial sphere. And they allow us to better understand the role of formal authorities, formal networking and the integration of individual actors in the regime of the national administration.
