Abstract
Using sources, this talk looks at the activities of the klephts during the pre-revolutionary period and the “idealisation” of them that was systematically attempted in the newly formed Greek state in order to create quite a different image from what was the case in reality. What were the reasons behind this idealisation and what mental constructions were used to identify the actions of klephts with those of armatoles or to identify a place in the Peloponnese with those of the powerful armatoles of Central Greece? However, while the klephts of the pre-revolutionary period were “transformed” into heroes, banditry was systematically and universally persecuted by the Greek state and its institutions. Then, we will see that this mental journey characterised that of Philiki Etareia member Georgios Lassanis himself as shown through some characteristic documents from his archive which the parliamentary library houses.
