Abstract
This temporary exhibition presents Greece through the works of travellers and European publications of the 19th century. The title of the exhibition “Egreo, fila mater” is inspired by a verse from the Odyssey and means “arise, beloved mother”. This phrase, which is detected in texts of the pre-revolutionary period and in works of art created in Europe, was the slogan of some representatives of the Modern Greek Enlightenment. The exhibition presents personifications of Greece during the years of Ottoman rule, which are found in 19th-century European publications and travellers’ works.
