Acclaimed German lyric poet Wilhelm Müller is mostly known for his poems that Franz Schubert set to music in his song cycles Die Schöne Müllerin (The Lovely Miller-Girl) and Winterreise(Winter Journey). His ardent philhellenism made him known as “Müller of the Greeks”. Beethoven, in his Die Ruinen von Athen (The Ruins of Athens), dreams of a romantic Greece envisioning its freedom.
