Abstract

The Holy Diocese of Piraeus, as part of the Holy Synod’s call to honour the memory of Georgios Karaiskakis, who died on 23 April 1827, a day after suffering a fatal wound in the present area of Neo Faliro, hosts a conference on "The battle of Athens with emphasis on the contribution of Georgios Karaiskakis and Yannis Makriyannis. The purpose of the event is to honour the heroes of the Revolution who gave their best for freedom. The first speaker begins his talk with a general historical context and outline of the battle, centred on Faliro. He emphasises the personality and special contribution of Makriyannis, who was a pious warrior and historian, to the struggle. The next two speakers refer to Karaiskakis, this great hero, referring to his difficult life, his military skills and his intelligence. He starred in many battles and caused fear in opponents. His death negatively affected the psychology of the army which, with the wrong instructions of the English leaders in the Battle of Athens, was led to defeat.
