Abstract

The Holy Diocese of Messinia, as part of its series of events marking the bicentenary of the Greek Revolution, presents a conference on “The contribution of Orthodox monasticism to the education and culture of the nation, with special emphasis on Messinia”. The first speaker highlights is the contribution of the monasteries of Greece, especially of Messinia, to the revolution. Monasticism in Messinia has a long history, while the monks were the bearers of culture and education for the rural population. Their educational role and the participation of Messinian clergy in the revolution are important. The second speaker looks at the contribution of the monasteries of Messinia to the education of the Greeks during the revolution. The clergy established schools and offered everything and sacrificed themselves for the faith and homeland.
