Abstract
To mark the bicentenary of the 1821 Revolution, the Ephorate of Antiquities of the Cyclades is holding at Mykonos Archaeological Museum – and in collaboration with the Municipality of Mykonos – an exhibition entitled “The Aegean archipelago ablaze”. The exhibition is under the auspices of President Katerina Sakellaropoulou. The modular exhibition, inspired by the work of Jules Verne, is a unique opportunity to present, through a range of objects from all over the Cyclades, aspects of the pre-revolutionary society of the archipelago that was a vital area of social and political ferment that formed the appropriate conditions for the development of the forces of the struggle. The turbulent Aegean, before and during the revolution, inspires a distinct section of the exhibition where commercial activity and navigation go hand in hand with the action of pirates and corsairs to then emerge the revolutionary naval force itself. Dominant here is the reference to the heroine Manto Mavrogenous".
