Abstract
"The lecture presents Athenian paintings, sculptures and engravings related to persons and events of the 1821 Revolution. These are portraits of heroes and battle performances. Through the study of the specific artistic compositions, an attempt is made to illuminate both the general education of the artists – indigenous and foreign – of the 19th, 20th but also of 21st century that they have created as well as the standards that they have chosen, that is, their iconographic types. The speaker’s includes the reassessment of factual data captured by the works, the detection of influences of their creators, the degree of convergence/divergence at the public and private level regarding commissioning, the reception of the works by art criticism in the daily and periodical press, the provoking fruitful reflection and drawing the appropriate conclusions."
