Abstract
The Greek National Theatre presents for the first time in dramatized form one of the leading works by the national poet Dionysios Solomos “The Free Besieged”. Directed by Thanos Papakonstantinou, who brings to the stage an atmosphere of death and resurrection. The poet, starting from the heroic struggle of Missolonghi during the second siege of the city (1825-1826) until the heroic exit from it, refers to the struggle of man for his external and internal freedom. The work, the famous “poem of debt”, was never completed and survives in handwritten excerpts, which comprise three sketches.
