Abstract
Dionysios Solomos began working on “The Woman of Zakynthos” during the second siege of Messolongi (1825-1826). Reconstructing and summarising events of this period, it is the story of a hypothetical monk, Dionysios, who lives in the chapel of Agios Lypios (Alypios) in Zakynthos. Behind this person, of course, hides our national poet. “The fall of Messolongi meant the final act of the 1821 Revolution,” notes Spyros Vrachoritis who, after 36 years from the historical performance of the “Woman of Zakynthos” with Mirka Gementzaki and Nikos Skylodimos, returns to Solomos’ original text, which for him “is the dramatic epilogue of the dithyramb “Hymn to Freedom”.
