Abstract
The Thessaloniki State Symphony Orchestra and the Thessaloniki Concert Hall celebrate the bicentenary of the Greek Revolution with a festive concert. The great Greek composers Dionysios Lavragkas and Manolis Kalomiris incorporate elements of our folk music tradition in their works. The “Prelude and Fugue on Two Greek Themes” of the first gives the triumphant tone of the Greek uprising, while the “Destruction of Psara” of the second mourns one of the greatest disasters of the struggle. The programme concludes with Beethoven's “Heroic Symphony”, a groundbreaking work imbued with the ideals of the European Enlightenment, which was the flame with which he spiritually lit the wick of the Greek Revolution.
